The Galloway Hoard inscriptions

Online talk by Dr David Parsons hosted by Kirkcudbright Galleries. Free. Bookings via Eventbrite.

Join Dr David Parsons as he calls in to Kirkcudbright Galleries to tell us all about the discoveries from the Galloway Hoard.

Buried at the beginning of the 10th century in Dumfries and Galloway, the Hoard lay undisturbed for a thousand years before being discovered by a metal detectorist and excavated by an archaeologist in September 2014. This incredible find brings together the richest collection of rare and unique Viking-age objects ever found in Britain or Ireland.

Six artefacts from the hoard bear Anglo-Saxon inscriptions, which raise questions about the linguistic and cultural make-up of those who buried the treasure, and of the wider local population. This talk will describe and discuss the inscriptions and set them in the context of what is known about languages and societies around the Irish Sea in the ninth and tenth centuries.
